[UPDATE]

With the November elections exactly 6 weeks away organizations across the big bend are looking to register as many people to vote as they can.

A party is the perfect way to describe the situation going on behind me here at the Smith Williams Center.

The event that hopes to register people to vote kicked off about an hour ago and will run until 8 this evening.

Jabari Paul, Event Organizer: "The goal is to register many voters for November."

They're trying to entice people with BBQ cookout, games music you name it.

This of course all falls on national register to vote day just raising more awareness of the importance of voting.

Tallahassee, FL - September 25, 2012

Tuesday marks National Voter Registration Day and people all across Leon County are working to get those ready for the November election.

The elections are exactly six weeks away and that has many in the community making sure everyone over the age of 18 is ready to hit the polls come November.

Right now I'm at the smith Williams service center south of FAMU where a number of organizations is out registering people to vote including Leon county supervisor of elections office, league of women voters and FAMU social work association of grad students.

The event was titled a voter registration block party where there will be a BBQ dinner for the public, games music and more.
This event ran from 5 until 8 pm.

Tallahassee, FL - September 25, 2012

On Tuesday, September 25th, Dream Defenders will be teaming with local organizations to register voters for National Voter Registration Day. To mark this occasion, Dream Defenders and local groups will hold a “voter registration block-party” at the Walker Ford Community Center. The event will entail free food for the public, music, activities, and plenty of information on voting. All who are not registered to vote, need to change their address, or update their signature are encouraged to come out and attend this event.

Dream Defenders will be registering voters at the University Commons on FAMU's campus from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM and on FSU's campus at the Union Green from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM. As well, Dream Defenders will be canvassing the Walker Ford Community from 3:00 PM-5:00 PM, going door to door, trying to get Tallahassee community members registered. All of this will end with a community block-party at Walker Ford Community Center at 5:00 PM.

Voter Suppression is also an issue that Dream Defenders will be educating students and community members on. Recently, Dream Defenders protested the appearance of Governor Scott on FSU's campus, demanding that he suspend the newly created voter suppression laws and restore civil rights for non-violent ex-offenders. Because of this new law, voter registration among black and brown communities have been severely affected.

Dream Defenders is student civil rights organization founded this year in light of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, dedicated to protecting the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr., and other civil rights leaders.
