Olustee, FL - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, Florida’s first state park, has won a Top 20 Event award in honor of its reenactment of the Battle of Olustee by the Southeastern Tourism Society. The reenactment event will be held February 18-20, 2011 with more than 2,000 demonstrators presenting living history impressions of military and civilian life at the time of Florida’s largest Civil War battle.
The prestigious award singles out the Olustee Battle Reenactment as one of twenty must-see events to experience in the Southeastern United States in the month of February 2011. The Southeast Tourism Society, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and development of tourism throughout the Southeast. It was founded in 1983 with eight member states—Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and Arkansas joined later.
The living history weekend features a Civil War-era battle reenactment on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., as well as the reenactment of the Battle of Olustee on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Period music concerts, lectures, battlefield surgical practices and the lives of both white and black civilians during the war will be portrayed by reenactors. Military camps and drills by infantry and artillery are scheduled throughout the weekend.
On Friday, February 18, educational programs are planned for students. School groups may call (386) 397-7009 to register for the event. The fee for Friday will be $3.00 per person. Admission on Saturday and Sunday will be $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, pre-school aged children are free. Food concessions will be available. Pets are not allowed at the Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park during the reenactment.
