Press Release: Florida A&M University
The Lyceum Series will host Youth International Youth USA (YIYUSA), a pan-Asian dance group on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Hall Auditorium. Presented by the Asian Media Access and Iny Asian Dance Theater, admission is free and open to the public.
The performance will tell the story of a dragon girl named YIYUSA, who is given the power to connect with youth all over the world and throughout time. After being greeted by several different groups of young dancers, she wants to dance like them instead of like a dragon. A circus ringmaster, KEKU, who entertains her with various circus acts, makes YIYUSA want to be a real girl even more. He tells her that he would grant her wish to become a real girl in exchange for her soul.
Presented by an all youth cast, which is how the YIYUSA’s name coming about, the dance group performs non-stop without narration. Dance choreographer Iny Xiong has mixed the pan-Asian dance styles to create YIYUSA. The group’s Asian fusion dance style is not categorized to any one particular dance style and has played a major role in innovations of many contemporary Asian-American dance studios. Often Asian-American immigrants are strong supporters of these dance studios as a place to teach their children the traditions of their homelands.
