The following provides guidance on how people can help in the wake of the devastating tornadoes that hit Oklahoma. Note that this guidance is directed at non-local gifts and volunteers, outside the immediate impact area. At no time should Salvation Army units encourage personnel and/or goods be sent to the site without coordination and approval through The Salvation Army’s Southern Territory Headquarters.

Cash Contributions Encouraged
Donors are encouraged to contribute cash. In-kind donations require sorting, boxing, palletizing, storage, and delivery to the disaster location. All of these activities can be costly and time consuming, and therefore may delay service delivery. Cash donations allow The Salvation Army to purchase product to quickly and efficiently meet the most urgent needs of disaster victims. When possible, the purchases are made near the disaster site to stimulate the local economy and ensure quicker delivery.

Corporate (Bulk) Donations
The Salvation Army appreciates in-kind gift offers from corporate contributors. For all jurisdictions, outside Oklahoma, corporate in-kind gift offers should be referred to:

Donations from the General Public
Currently, The Salvation Army is not accepting in-kind donations from the general public for disaster relief operations.
Used clothing and used furnishings are not needed for disaster relief.
However, The Salvation Army depends upon your donation of used clothing and other items to support local programming. Please consider donating your used clothing to your local Salvation Army Thrift Store.
The Salvation Army recruits and deploys disaster workers through its local Salvation Army units. To register as a disaster worker:

If you are a new volunteer, registering today, bear in mind that The Salvation Army deploys trained disaster workers already associated with The Salvation Army first. A standard deployment is two weeks, including twelve working days and two travel days. If you have not been trained or cannot commit to the time needed, it is less likely The Salvation Army will deploy you to the disaster site.There may, however, still be opportunities for you to serve locally at your local Salvation Army unit.
Do not travel to the disaster site on your own, without being deployed through your local Salvation Army unit. Spontaneous volunteers arriving uninvited a disaster sight are not helpful and can impede the delivery of relief services at the disaster site. If you do self-deploy, The Salvation Army makes no commitment to provide work, food, lodging, or any other form of support for you when you arrive.
