In December of 2011, WCTV told the story of a soldier's surprise return home to Cairo, Georgia from Afghanistan.

Now that soldier is based at Moody Air force Base in Valdosta and she is trying to raise money for a scholarship foundation in the name of a fallen soldier and friend.

Sonya Couture is raising money for the Tara Jacobs Brown Scholarship foundation that she, Brown's father, and another military friend founded two years ago. Couture is originally from Tallahassee, before moving to Cairo.

The scholarships are awarded to students of Brown's home town high school in Deland, Florida. They are given away on or near the date of Brown's death on April 27. Couture said Last year the foundation gave away a scholarship to a young lady who now attends FSU.

On Saturday, February 22 there will be the 2nd Annual Fundraiser Banquet in Deland. Their goal is raise $10,000 to issue $1,000 to 10 students. Couture said Jacobs was very serious about her education and was taking several online classes while she was deployed.

"Help me reach this goal not only for her but for all those students out there who are hopefuls and we hope to make a difference in her name and keep her legacy alive," said Couture.
