Seniors Need Fans to Stay Cool

June 26, 2013
By Julie Montanaro

Staying cool is always a challenge around here in June.

It's especially challenging for seniors. Some don't have air conditioning and others can't afford the utility bills that come with it.

Elder Care Services says it is getting about 50 requests a week for box fans to prop in windows and doors.

It is asking for donations to help meet the need.

We tagged along when Elder Care Services dropped off a fan for Willie Harris.

"It's going to be a lot of help. It's going to keep us cool. We need it and we're going to enjoy it and I'm glad to get it."

Volunteers there say the fans are going out the door as quickly as they come in.

"We take pride in helping seniors the best that we can and in the summer months, we have an annual fan drive," said case worker Ed Gines. "It's a beautiful program. We help an average of 50 to 60 seniors a week during these hot summer months."

If you can donate a box fan or the money to buy one, please drop it off at Elder Care Services. It is located at 2518 W Tennessee Street in Tallahassee. You can contact (850) 921-5554 for more information.
