So Unique Enrichment for Girls is a non-profit organization based out of Tallahassee, Florida that strives to empower young girls in the community to build a positive and purposeful future. According to founder, Minesha White, “what makes us So Unique, is that were able to strategically assess the girls and the mentor and partner them up by passion." Started in 1999, So Unique was the first modeling after school club offered in the Leon County School system. White says "it evolved from just doing the modeling as a creative tool to introduce character development, and it's transformed into an elite mentor-ship organization."
Adolescent counselor, Dr. Jane Marks, feels this is a program the community should be proud of and says she is happy to be apart of it. She says "this program does a lot of teaching, and I love the fact that it teaches and there is a lot of focus on developmental milestones but more importantly, the focus on building self esteem and self confidence." Marks also says this program will expose young girls to all parts of this community and states “young girls feel accomplished, and they feel good about these accomplishments, then the programs are extraordinarily successful."
The Leadership Program, is one of a few programs that so unique offers and its only one dollar a day, and scholarships are available. White says "we just recently partnered with Florida State so if they are Florida State students they can simply go to the student activities, and look us up there. We have orientations all the time, we even have online orientations that they can do to become a mentor." for young girls involved in So Unique, it is giving direction at a very early age. Nayla "Sprinkles" Harris is one of these young girls and says, “its helping me be like my mommy, and when I grow up I wish I could be a doctor, just like my momma.”
In 2011, the Mayor of Tallahassee proclaimed Tallahassee Girls day in honor of So Unique Enrichment for Girls. This year, Girls Day will be held this Saturday, August 25th at Tallahassee Community College. It's a free event where girls from Tallahassee and surrounding counties will be honored with a full day of entertainment and enrichment activities.
