We might take our sports and athletics for granted, but for the athletes competing at the Special Olympics Summer Games at East Gadsden High School, they were leaving it all on the track.

"It means a tremendous amount to Gadsden County, we've had a rich history in supporting special olympics, last year we received an outstanding award, a statewide award, the Marilyn Grigsby award for our support of Special Olympics," said Gadsden County Schools Superintendent Reginald C. James.

The award recognized the county's support of the Special Olympics program since it began in 1972.

Margaret Pinson has been the area's Special Olympics Coordinator for 20 years. She's retiring after these games, but she says the experiences never get old.

"It's the only competition that some of these athletes get. The only time they feel like they're worthwhile, and they can see their growth from year to year. They want to challenge themselves. Can I do the 100 this year? Can i do the 200? So they challenge themselves as well as us challenging them," said Pinson

For many of the athletes, the challenges they face throughout life will never end. But at least for one day, everyone can feel like champions.

"That's worth it. That's what makes it all worth while," said Pinson.
