TALLAHASSEE: May 3 -10 has been designated as Tallahassee-Leon County Bike Week – an opportunity to celebrate bicycling and the numerous reasons to ride. Whether you bike to work or school to save money and time, improve your health, protect the environment, or simply to explore your community in a new way, Bike Week is a perfect time for Tallahassee area residents to experience how cycling benefits them and their community.

Here is just a sampling of the benefits cycling provides.

  • A BETTER BODY – More than 60% of Americans are overweight or obese, and rates of obesity-related diseases such as diabetes are soaring. Riding a bike to work or school eliminates the need to go to the gym, and riding just 3 hours a week can slash a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke in half. • MORE MONEY – The average annual cost of owning and operating an automobile is $6500 or more depending on where people live and how much they drive (Source: AAA). The cost of riding and maintaining a bicycle is about $300 a year.

  • CLEANER AIR – Motorized vehicles account for approximately 70% of the carbon monoxide released into the air. Riding a bike is a simple way to reduce that number and improve air quality. (Source: League of American Bicyclists)

Numerous bike-oriented events are planned throughout Tallahassee during Bike Week. This includes group rides, bike safety events, and the first-ever Celebrate Cycling Bike Festival in Cascades Park on Saturday, May 10. For a complete list of events and activities, visit www.commuterservices.org.
