Tallahassee, FL- Several neighborhoods throughout Tallahassee and Leon County were recognized as some of the area's best.

The Council of Neighborhood Associations, the County and City held their 33rd annual Neighborhood Awards Reception.

The reception recognizes the best small neighborhoods (less than 200 homes), best large neighborhoods (more than 200 homes), best unincorporated neighborhood, best business neighbor, public servant and best neighbor.

The neighborhoods are selected by a committee made up of CONA, City and County members.

The committee chooses those neighborhoods it says best exemplifies community service, community engagement and beautification.

This year's best large neighborhood winners are Lafayette Oaks Home Association (County) and Levy Parks Neighborhood (City). The best small neighborhood winners are the All Saints District Community Association (City) and the Callen Neighborhood Association(County).

The best unincorporated neighborhood was Avondale Homeowners Association.

Each winning neighborhood is given a sign acknowledging it as 2013's best along with the bragging rights that go along with it.

Neighbor of the year winners are Neal Floyd and Tom Napier.

The 2013 Business of the year is Pennington P.A.

Sgt. Art Shepherd is the Pubic Servant of the Year.

The Council of Neighborhood Association’s 33rd Annual Awards Reception is set for Monday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Goodwood Museum & Gardens in the Carriage House Conference Center, 1600 Miccosukee Road.

The event is hosted jointly by the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA), Leon County and the City of Tallahassee. Leon County and the City of Tallahassee will respectively recognize two outstanding Small Neighborhoods of the Year (200 or fewer homes) and two Large Neighborhoods of the Year (more than 200 homes).

The County will also honor one Unincorporated Area Neighborhood of the Year (outside the city limits). Winning neighborhoods will receive a sign to display at their entrance and bragging rights as a 2013 Neighborhood of the Year. The County and City will also recognize their respective 2013 Neighbors of the Year.

Nominees considered for these categories are individuals who have exemplified the characteristics of leadership and servitude in making contributions to the community.

The nominees for Neighborhood of the Year – Large Category are:


  • Frenchtown Neighborhood Improvement Association, Inc.

  • Jake Gaither Neighborhood Association

  • Lafayette Oaks Homes Association

  • Levy Park Neighborhood Association

  • South Wood Residential Community Association

  • Weems Plantation and Gardens Homeowners Association

  • Woodgate Neighborhood Association


The nominees for Neighborhood of the Year – Small Category are:

  • All Saints District Community Association, Inc

  • Avondale Homeowners Association

  • Callen Neighborhood Association

  • Florida A&M Neighborhood Association


The nominees for Neighborhood of the Year – Unincorporated Category are:

The nominees for Neighbor of the Year are:

  • Sarah Barnes of Macon School Community Association

  • Annette Hale Ford of Florida A&M Neighborhood Association

  • Neal Floyd of Lafayette Oaks Homes Association

  • Betsy and Nickki Henderson of Frenchtown Neighborhood Improvement Association, Inc.

  • Jerrlyne Jackson of Jake Gaither Neighborhood Association

  • Marvin Naiman of Eastgate Neighborhood Association

  • Tom Napier of Woodgate Neighborhood Association

  • Waymon and Lucy Sewell of Los Robles Neighborhood Association

  • Mary K. Surles of Avondale Homeowners Association


Winners of the Neighborhood and Neighbor of the Year awards will be announced at the reception, where CONA will also present its annual Public Servant of the Year Award and the 2013 Business Neighbor of the Year Award.
