AMTC offers manufacturing camps that teach youth how to build skateboards
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 28, 2013) – Tallahassee Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center is again hosting its highly-successful series of composite materials summer camps for local teenagers. Beginning June 10, students from Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla counties will be coming to TCC for one of AMTC’s two, week-long sessions (June 10-14, June 24-28).
The camps are designed to take participants through the steps of manufacturing composite materials with the end goal of creating their own composite material product, a skateboard, in the training center’s safe, state-of-the-art environment. The camp offers an up-close and personal look at composite material types of manufacturing and related jobs—a valuable resource for students trying to determine a career path. In addition to the on-site training, students will also be taken on field trips to the High Performance Materials Institute at FSU, the FSU Magnet Lab and the Jackson Bluff Skate Park to test-ride their skateboards.
Bruce Batton, AMTC director, looks forward to the outreach opportunities to local counties that this camp will present.
“The goal of the camp is to increase middle and high school students’ interest in the engineering and technology fields. In past years, students have had fun and learned a lot through these camps.”
Interested students must have a letter of recommendation from a science or math teacher to be accepted into the camp. The camp fee is $129.
