Tallahassee, FL - With low temperatures forecasted to once again drop below 35 degrees for three or more hours tonight, Monday, Feb. 7, and the evenings of Tuesday, Feb. 8, Wednesday, Feb. 9, Thursday, Feb. 10, and Friday, Feb. 11, a team of area human service agencies, local government and the faith-based community will once again open the temporary cold night shelter, located at the former Belle Vue Middle School, 2214 Belle Vue Way.
Any adult who needs temporary shelter from cold weather at nighttime
may stay at the Belle Vue shelter, which will be open this evening, Feb.
7, through Friday, Feb. 11. The temporary cold night shelter, which is
located in the school's gymnasium, is coordinated by the Big Bend
Homeless Coalition. It opens at 8 p.m. and remains open overnight,
closing the following morning at 7 a.m.
The facility is open to adults only. A temporary shelter telephone
line, (850) 205-6030, offers a recording of the cold night shelter's
status on any given evening. Officials will reconvene Thursday morning
to discuss shelter operations beyond Friday. Families with children are
advised to proceed to The Shelter, located at 480 W. Tennessee St.
StarMetro, the City of Tallahassee's mass transit system, provides
transportation between The Shelter on West Tennessee Street and the
temporary location at Belle Vue Middle School, when open. Two trips are
scheduled, with departures from The Shelter at 8:30 p.m. and a second at
9:30 p.m. if required. Return trips to The Shelter from the temporary
location depart the following morning at 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m.
Volunteers from the local faith-based community continue to provide
assistance at the Belle Vue location. Snacks and water will be available
for those staying the night. The facility has showers available in addition to cots and blankets being provided by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. Operations are managed by staff from the Big Bend Homeless Coalition.
