Six Local Women Honored During Women's History Month

Tallahassee, FL - March is Women's History Month and The Oasis Center for Women and Girls in Tallahassee is honoring six local women through their Trailblazers program. Executive Director, Haley Cutler says "we think that women's history month is a special time to celebrate the unique contributions of women in our community, in our state, in our nation."

For the fifth year, The Oasis Center for Women and Girls is recognizing 6 Trailblazing women who have made a difference, both now, and for the future of girls in the community. Cutler says “we help give them more role models so they can have an expansive vision of who they can be and what they can do and we help teach boys to recognize and respect women’s leadership."

One of this years chosen Trailblazers is educational innovator, Roseanne Wood. She helped start SAIL High School back in 1975 and turned it into a Tallahassee institution. After 36 years, the former principal has retired but continues to be a positive influence to kids in the community. Wood says, "I don't feel my work is finished yet, but like I say, when I see a young person in town that in someway our school helped to shape to become themselves and be proud of themselves, it makes me feel good of course."

The Oasis Center for Women and Girls provides a variety of different services from counseling and single mom support groups to school programs and summer camps. Cutler states "our mission is to improve the lives of through celebration and support. We are this community’s community center for women and girls."

Cutler says Women's History Month is a special time to reflect on progress made and to strive for continued change. She also says "we would love to get to a place where women's history and the history of all traditionally marginalized groups are taught in the history lessons and that women's contributions are fully and completely recognized."

The public is invited to celebrate the 2013 Trailblazer and Girls Can Do Anything! honorees at the Women’s History Month Community Luncheon on March 28, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at the Lively Cafe at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
