Members of the YMCA in Thomasville have made fitness a priority in their lives - and not just something they attempt to do once a year.
Richard Watt has been a Thomasville YMCA member since 1984, and says he doesn't "believe in New Year's resolutions", because he "believe[s] in living everyday ... and work[ing] out everyday."
Other members say they find it helpful to work out with a buddy and motivate each other.
Staff at the Y say a reasonable workout routine combined with mindful eating habits is something people should resolve to do year-round.
Says Kim Smith, the Thomasville Y's Wellness and Fitness Director, "Everything is linked to being healthier by working out, and what we want to get across is you shouldn't do it one or two months a year - this should be a healthy lifestyle that you're living."
Community members say working out shouldn't be a chore - in fact, it's better when it's fun.
Steve Poehler has 50 pounds from working out steadily at the YMCA over the past 2 years. He says the endless group class options, as well as people he's befriended keeps him interested.
"It never gets boring, it's never a routine, so I've always enjoyed coming in and meeting everybody, and talking ... these are kind of like my second family here."
From swimming and group aerobics classes to one-on-one coaching with a personal trainer, the YMCA says its goal is to help people in the community feel their best in 2011 - and beyond.
