Valdosta High School Holds Mock Disaster Drill For Students

There were 301 drunk driving fatalities in Georgia in 2012 according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Lowering that statistic is part of the reason behind Monday's mock disaster drill at Valdosta High School.

"It taught me a lot. Not to drink and drive because I don't want to die," said Valdosta High School student Shamiyah Harris.

"It was shocking to see how hurt everyone got," said Valdosta High School student Alexandra Holt.

Valdosta High School junior and senior students are now more concerned with distracted driving after they witnessed a mock disaster drill. Students who participated in the drill lay on the ground, and inside the vehicles, pretending to be injured or killed, as their classmates looked on.

"It made me aware, it opened up my eyes to what really could happen," said Harris.

"It made me sad, it made me not want to do that, and be a good person," said Holt.

The scenario was created because Valdosta High School's prom is this weekend, and organizers hope it will make students aware of the dangers of distracted driving.

"If we can save one person that's worth our effort here. Safety is utmost the first most important thing for Valdosta High School, for safety of our students, and we look forward to doing this," said Valdosta High School Counselor Brian Law.

The mock drill included the Valdosta Police Department, Valdosta Fire Department, EMS, and a funeral home.

Claire Kirkpatrick is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions at Valdosta High School. She said to be a part of the scenario will hopefully open up the eyes of her classmates.

"Kids our age can make stupid decisions and especially during times like that," said Kirkpatrick. "Putting this together and having our students see their own peers in a situation like that hopefully puts it in perspective for them."

Organizers said they last held a mock disaster drill four years ago, but plan on continuing it every year.
