Valdosta, Georgia --
Thanksgiving isn’t quite here yet, however, the City of Valdosta is already preparing for the holidays. Mayor John J. Fretti and his family will officially kick off the holiday season in Valdosta with the traditional lighting of the City Christmas Tree, on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m., at City Hall, located at 216 E. Central Avenue.
City employees from the Fire, Public Works, and Engineering Departments are decorating City Hall and assembling the 30-foot tree located on the City Hall front lawn. City crews are also busy putting up banners and decorations throughout the downtown area in time for the holiday festivities.
This year’s tree lighting ceremony will feature several special guests at the request of First Lady Robin Fretti. A few dozen children from the Moody Air Force Base Youth Programs will provide the entertainment with the singing of some holiday favorites. Spouses of deployed military personnel are invited to attend as the Mayor’s personal guests, and event participants may sign greeting cards at the event that will be mailed to these deployed military personnel in time for the Christmas holiday.
The mayor and his family will be honoring the Department of Family and Child Services (DFACS) Foster Family of the Year and the Adoptive Family of the Year, bringing attention to the services that DFACS provides to our community and the continued need for foster families in our area.
Residents of the Ashley House in Downtown Valdosta, Main Street merchants and patrons are also invited to help kick off this special time of year and the host of activities that will take place in the heart of the city in the upcoming weeks.
This event is free and open to the public. Hot cocoa, apple cider and other light refreshments may be enjoyed following the lighting ceremony.
