Staff Sargeant Alvin Figueroa wrote to to WCTV to tell of the final results for the Toys for Tots program.
Here is a portion of that letter:
"Wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how we did this year. We collected a total of 12,610 toys between here in Tallahassee and Monticello (98% was in Tallahassee). I purchased a total of 2,020 toys between Toys R Us and Wal-Mart, and received 7,546 toys from the Toys for Tots Foundation. For a grand total of 22,176 toys collected for the local community. We were able to bring the spirit of Christmas to 3,168 of the areas neediest children. This means that on average each child received 7 toys. I think that adds up to a great Christmas morning. We also collected a total of $11,830. The foundation also pushed money to our local account. I spent a total of $31,178.43 on toys this year and only $706.38 on items other than toys (i.e. food for volunteers, gas, etc). That is only 2.22% spent on items other than toys."
The U.S. Marine Toys For Tots Foundation collected toys at more than 100 locations in Tallahassee.
WCTV was actually one of those drop off locations and this morning 12-17 Alvin Figueroa came to pick up boxes overflowing with toys from people our community.
Figueroa says now hundreds of kids will never have to know what it feel like to go without presents on Christmas day.
Thanks to the outstanding support from folks in the community WCTV was presented the "Commander's Award" from the United States Marine Corps Reserve for "Outstanding support of the 2010 Marine Toys for Tots Program."
And of course we want to thank all of our viewers for dropping off toys and helping make this possible.
