Wiregrass Tech Students Win Gold At State Competitions

Valdosta, GA—Wiregrass Georgia Technical College (WGTC) students recently brought home nine gold, three silver, and two bronze medals from SkillsUSA state competitions in Atlanta held March 13 - 15. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skills service occupations, including health occupations. The Skills USA program hosts local, state, and national competition for students to showcase their skills learned through hands-on training in the classroom.

“Wiregrass is extremely proud of all our students who participated in the SkillsUSA competition. Our instructors did an excellent job working with their students in preparing them for this state competition,” stated Wiregrass President, Dr. Tina K. Anderson. “We are thrilled to have eleven students who won gold and will represent Wiregrass and the state of Georgia at the National Championships in June. We congratulate these students, faculty, and advisors.”

WGTC students who competed and won gold include Chad Carver, of Douglas, in Electrical Construction Wiring; Cassidy Foy, of Quitman, in Practical Nursing; Jared Johnson, of Fitzgerald, in Mobile Electronics Installation; Jefferson Bedford, of Fitzgerald, in Residential System Installation; Josh Prince, of Valdosta, in Job Skills Demonstration A; Blake Revell, of Fitzgerald, in Telecommunications Cabling; Cody Healey, of Quitman, in Firefighting; Tamika Edwards, of Valdosta, in Esthetics; and Brooke Davis, Hannah Stephens, and Ashley Walls all of Fitzgerald , Crime Scene Investigation. These state-level gold-medal winners will go on to represent Wiregrass GA Tech at the SkillsUSA National Championships in June in Kansas City, Mo.

Silver medal winners from WGTC were Diego Trujillo, of Valdosta, in Automotive Refinishing Technology; Arlandus Barlow, of Fitzgerald, in Residential System Installation; and Seth Wallace, of Fitzgerald, in Telecommunications Cabling.

Students who won bronze medals at the state level were Cynthia Barfield, of Valdosta, in Collision Repair Technology; and Talia Williams, of Baxely, in Medical Terminology.
