YOUNG ACTORS THEATRE: Tallahassee’s Tradition for Theatre
Season 2011-2012 brings the best of Broadway to Young Actors Theatre. Join us as we raise the curtain on our 36th year of bringing the highest quality family entertainment to Tallahassee.
November 11-20, 2011
The Cat in the Hat is your host and emcee (an all-around mischief maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. The joyous musical centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant; in a story that makes you laugh and cry.
To Kill a Mockingbird
February 24 – March 2, 2012
Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice presents a gothic coming-of-age tale in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice. Told through the voice of Scout Finch, this gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable stage adaptation illustrates the heroism and courage of one man—Scout's father, Atticus Finch—in the face of blind and violent hatred. When a black man, Tom Robinson is arrested on the accusation of raping a white woman, Atticus agrees to defend him. Many townspeople demand Atticus to pull out of the trial, but he refuses. How will the trial turn out—and will it change any of the racial tension in the town? If you have read the novel, you will relive every treasured moment.

Don’t miss the boat! As the S.S. American heads out to sea, two unlikely pairs set out on the course to true love….proving sometimes destiny needs a little help from a crew of singing sailors, an exotic disguise and some good old-fashioned blackmail. Peppering this hilariously bumpy ride are some of musical theatre’s most memorable standards, including “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s De-lovely,” and of course, “Anything Goes.”
Adventures of a Wimpy Kid
April 5-7, 2012
Based on the books by Jeff Kinney, this delightful stage adaptation follows the adventures of “wimpy kid”, Greg Haffley. When he receives a diary from his mother, Greg records his first year of middle school. Through his “journal”, we learn about the infamous “cheese touch,” and how to deal with girl-boy parties, acne, taking tests, parents, best friends, worst enemies, and all that goes along with being a kid. If you loved the movies and the series of Kinney’s books, you’ll enjoy the adventures of Greg, Rodrick, Rowley and Angie.
