Tallahassee, Florida - Feb. 24, 2012 -

On Wednesday, February 15, the Tallahassee Museum’s board of trustees approved plans to design, build and operate a tree top adventure course with zip lines. This decision was reached after several months of feasibility and marketing studies as well as extensive investigation and analysis. The Museum’s board directed management to move forward with the project as quickly as possible.

Once operational later this spring, course visitors will be able to explore nature from high in the trees having fun moving safely from tree to tree and challenging themselves with thrilling elements such as tightropes, crab walks, jungle bridges, nets, and best of all, zip lines. The course will be suitable for a variety of participants based upon body heights rather than ages.

Treetop Adventure Concept of Sanford, Fl has been commissioned to design and build the course, which will feature over 70 games and challenges including 10 zip lines. It is anticipated that construction will begin within a month and be completed in late April or early May. Financing is being provided by Florida Commerce Credit Union.

The course will be intentionally designed to blend with the Museum’s natural environment, inspired by the trees and the natural flow of the terrain and flora. Several courses of various difficulty levels will be built, including a children’s course, an intermediate course, and a 2-hour “signature course” for the truly adventurous.

Museum and course admission, as well as use, will be completely separate; however, combo tickets will be available for interested visitors to enjoy both.

In addition to temporarily housing and employing the construction staff, the course will create permanent jobs for the course managers and the guides. “Economic development and job creation are important parts of the Museum’s place in the Big Bend community,” says Russell Daws, CEO and Executive Director of the Museum.

“I could not be more thrilled about the new tree top adventure course at the Tallahassee Museum,” stated Leon County Commissioner, Jane Sauls. “Helping to bring this project to my district has been a labor of love that will pay-off many times over through economic development, tourism, and employment boosts. This is exactly the kind of project my district, the Museum, and Leon County needs.”

The new tree top adventure course is expected to be a selling point for both ecotourism and destination tourism groups considering the Big Bend area. "We at Visit Tallahassee are thrilled about the development of the new tree top adventure course at the Tallahassee Museum," said Lee Daniel, executive director of Visit Tallahassee. "This addition both greatly enhances our outdoor product and will generate increased economic impact by bringing new and repeat visitors to our destination."

"I'm excited about this healthy, outdoor activity that helps further our community's image as a natural and ecotourism destination," says city commissioner Mark Mustian. The courses offer a creative way to encourage people of all ages to get outdoors and engage in healthy and physically challenging activities.

“We will be giving people a bird’s eye view of what we already have at the Museum- a different perspective on interacting with nature,” Daws says. “We’re excited to incorporate a fun and physically healthy experience to the Museum that will further expand and diversify our audiences and strengthen our financial foundations.”

In the coming weeks, additional information will become available including the course’s new name, hours of operation, ticket prices and opening date.
