TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 7, 2011) –
Just in time for Halloween, Theatre TCC! will open its 2011-12 season at 8 p.m., Thursday, October 13, with the campy, rollicking musical Zombie Prom. It’s the story of teen romance in the atomic age, as bad boy Jonny and good girl Toffee fall in love. After a break up, Jonny commits suicide by driving his motorcycle into a nuclear reactor. The “undead” youth then returns to school hoping to take his girl to the prom.
Set in the 1950s, the show hits the jackpot with songs such as "Rules, Regulations, and Respect," "The Voice in the Ocean," "How Can I say Goodbye?" and "Exposé.”
“Zombie Prom is a quirky variation of the basic romantic comedy,” said Eva Nielsen-Parks, TCC’s director of theatre. “Add a touch of 50s nostalgia and some catchy tunes, and the result is a fun night in theatre for everyone!”
Zombie Prom opened off-Broadway in 1996 and was also made into a short film that appeared in 2006. The music is by Dana P. Rowe, with lyrics and book by John Dempsey.
Theatre TCC’s production is directed by Naomi Rose-Mock, who also directed last year’s production of It’s a Wonderful Life. Nielsen-Parks says the show is suitable for ages ten and up.
Additional performances are scheduled for 8 p.m., October 14-15 and 20-22.
In early December, Theatre TCC! will present Wendy Wasserstein's Tony Award-winning play, The Heidi Chronicles. In April, audiences will be invited to take a step back in time with the hysterical farce The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.
All Theatre TCC! productions take place in Turner Auditorium, which boasts 480 seats with plenty of leg room, great sight lines and fantastic acoustics. The shows are produced by some of the region's best directors, designers and technicians.
