Beating Childhood Obesity

Information from The Greater Frenchtown Area Governor's Revitalization Council:

The Greater Frenchtown Area Governor's Revitalization Council along with the Leon County Health Department, would like to extend an invitation to the community, to both children and adults, to attend the next Community Engagement Workshop on May 14 and 15 at the Lincoln Neighborhood Service Center, located at 438 W. Brevard Street.

The theme is “People, Power, & Participation…A Call to Action.” Because a neighborhood’s food environment is linked to childhood obesity, access to healthy and nutritious food is needed to ensure healthy communities and to reduce childhood obesity. In addition to discussions about the food environment, there will be refreshments, door prizes and music, and dance and cooking demonstrations.

Partners involved in the effort to improve health by improving food availability and choices include The Greater Frenchtown Area Governor's Revitalization Council, Leon County Health Department, Frenchtown Neighborhood Improvement Association, Health Equity Alliance of Tallahassee, Project Food and Cultural Arts Design International. Their goal is to reduce the health disparities in local communities and address the issues associated with the neighborhood food environment.

The message is clear; People have the Power, with Participation to take charge of their health. By having a community forum, partners hope to engage community residents in a conversation about the neighborhood food environment, identify problems and brainstorm solutions.

“We cannot do this work alone,” said Miaisha Mitchell, executive director, The Greater Frenchtown Area Governor’s Revitalization Council. “We need your voice and skills. This is your chance to become an active citizen, to become involved and together…let’s make a difference.”

Again, the workshops will be Friday, May 14, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and
Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lincoln Neighborhood Service Center, at 438 West Brevard Street in Tallahassee.
