How to increase economic development potential for this area’s air service facilities

As a tactic for improving commercial air service to Tallahassee, 6 times as many citizens support Michelle Rehwinkle Vasilinda’s idea of creating an airport authority for Tallahassee Regional Airport (42%) than support Mayor Marks’ idea of expanding the General Aviation facility (7%).

Citizens believe that neither idea has significant merit:

29% believe creating an airport authority has merit for increasing the economic development potential of this area’s air service facilities

13% believe expanding the General Aviation facility has merit for increasing the economic development potential of this area’s air service facilities

State Representative Michelle Rehwinkle Vasilinda has filed a “shell bill” in the Florida Legislature setting up the concept of an airport authority for Tallahassee Regional Airport. She states that establishing an airport authority will help the airport become more of an economic asset to the community. She notes that air ridership has decreased for the past five years. Last year, the City Charter Review Committee recommended creation of an airport authority to focus on improving economic vitality.

City of Tallahassee Mayor John Marks replies that “I’ve not heard any complaints about operations of our airport. The complaints are over air service – rates and schedules – that the City has no control over. Marks adds, “We don’t see a benefit to an (airport) authority.” To assist economic development, Marks wants to focus on expanding the General Aviation facility where private airplanes, not commercial carriers such as Delta and US Airways, operate.

It is important to improve the airport facilities. It is the first thing that you see when coming to the area as you step off the plane. I immediately noticed a smell of mildew as I stepped into the main area, and saw some stained carpeting throughout! Gross! Improving these areas would go a long way to giving visitors a much better impression of beautiful Tallahassee.

Our airport has to be one of the weakest in the country for a state capital. While I understand that demand will drive the service, there are other things they could do that would make the place bearable. I wish they had a cell phone waiting lot. I wish you could leave your car there when renting a car and not have to pay parking fees. It's a pain to get to certain times of the day.

An Authorty didn't work in Panama City. Panama City airport is a joke - (says international, but they can't even keep the tower open or keep it clean) Planes have to fly back to their departure place because Panama City don't even know how to clear their one lonely runway!

Our airport needs to be privitized immediately. City Of Tallahassee do not even know how to run utilities and yet they are trying to run airport. Our airport is one of the worst airports. Even Panama City got an international airport ! Our parking is like $12 a day ! Paid for itself first year but citizens still have to pay ! City is in profit business form utilities and services to city customers. These need to be auxilary programs. I hope mayor just gets kicked out of the office as soon as possible ! He doe snot know nothing about airports! Just compare our rates to ANY airport and you shall see !
