State Representative Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda today completed a
week long immersion in education reform at the prestigious Oxford Roundtable in Oxford, United Kingdom. The Roundtable was attended by thirty participants from eleven states and four countries.
“I am honored to have been invited to this year’s Roundtable and humbled by the knowledge, expertise, and professionalism of my fellow participants. I believe I will be a better educator and legislator because of what I learned at Oxford. I bring back to Florida the knowledge and resources of friends made from other parts of the world and the U.S. to help Florida compete and educate our children well,” says Rehwinkel Vasilinda.
Eighteen presentations from charter school operators, public school principals, superintendents and university academics focused on what is working and not working around the world in 21st century schools. Discussion topics included: Barriers to Inclusion in Schools; Communication, Collaboration and Continuity‐ The Three C’s of School Reform; and Public Education and the Highly Effective Teacher.
“The philosopher Plutarch said ‘A mind is a not a vessel to be 0illed. It is a fire to be ignited.’ From the presentations and lively discussion and debate at the Roundtable, what struck me most clearly is whether traditional public school, private school, or charter school, the evidence is: The most effective teachers are those who engage with students, parents, and community, have academic freedom to pursue teaching methods addressed to individual learning styles of students, and care for their students beyond shear academic performance on standardized tests.” says Rep. Rehwinkel Vasilinda.
“If we agree that countries around the world and states and regions within our own nation are fiercely competitive in an era of a global, knowledge based economy, then it is imperative that we understand the competition. Knowledge, creativity, innovation, and critical thinking are the precious coins of the realm.”
