TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida may have prompted threats across our area.

School districts and authorities have investigated seven threats and three rumors in our area; three were in Leon County and the other seven were scattered throughout North Florida and South Georgia.

There have been a total of five arrests in all of these recent school threats, which shows just how seriously officials are taking them.

Tallahassee resident Rodney Brimm says school safety is always on his mind as a father.

He said, "It's what I constantly worry about. Is she alright in school? Is she being taken care of? Do I have to worry about anybody coming up here or anything like that?"

When it comes to school threats, authorities say they're not funny.

LT Grady Jordan with the Leon County Sheriff's Office said, "If you listen to any of those children that were in that school in Parkland, it's not funny to them."

Law enforcement officials say they've investigated every school threat locally since the Parkland school shooting.

"We don't have the luxury of not taking them seriously because, God forbid, we get information that we don't take seriously, and then somebody follows up with that threat," said LT Jordan.

Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna says it all boils down to this: "Don't do something stupid and post something on social media because it's going to come back and there's going to be ramifications and consequences for those actions."

In Leon County, along with prosecution, those consequences include expulsion from school.

"We are taking these threats very seriously. There will be severe consequences for those who chose to make poor decisions," Hanna said.

Authorities say it doesn't matter if the threat is verbal or written.

Investigators say if it's online, they'll do just what they did with the Godby threat and track the person down.

Regardless of the threat's validity, just making it is wrong.
