PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) -- A love story that stood the test of time, a couple in Pike County, Kentucky celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
"It was love at first sight, of course," said Randy Smith.
Randy and Mary Smith’s journey began in the hallways at Hindman High School.
"She was a sophomore and I was a senior," Randy said. "I had just graduated."
Randy said he knew he wanted to make Mary his bride. And in April of 1949, the teenagers tied the knot.
"We just went to Hazard and found a preacher, no big deal," Randy said.
Randy, an aspiring accountant, opened his own businesses. While Mary loved to design dresses, plant flower beds and sing songs.
The couple kept busy with their six kids. Now, they have five grandchildren.
The Smiths said life treated them well.
"We would do it again if we had a chance," Randy said.
Even as Mary battles Alzheimer's, Randy stands by her side.
After so many years of marriage, Randy said the secret to a happy marriage is a whole lot of patience, plenty of laughter and a whole lot of love.
Randy is 85 years old and Mary is 84 years old.
