VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- The Valdosta Police Department and the Lowndes County Coroner's Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Union Tank Car employee.
A VPD incident report states officers responded to a medical assistance call at the Union Tank Car Company around 9:15 a.m. on Friday.
The report says an employee, a 54-year-old man, later died. The report does not specify where the employee died, but states that the death was not in a medical facility under a physician's care.
Union Tank Car Company officials, the Lowndes County Coroner's Office, and VPD detectives are working together closely to determine the cause of death.
Lowndes County Coroner Austin Fiveash said, "Our hearts and prayers are with the family during this very difficult time. With all parties working together, we will know more soon."
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and further details have not been released.
The Union Tank Car Company, headquartered in Chicago, specializes in the maintenance and repair of railroad tank cars. In a statement to WCTV, the Chief People Officer of the Union Tank Car Company said:
"The people of Union Tank Car Company are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our co-workers at the UTLX Repair Services facility in Valdosta, Georgia, on Friday (December 15). The company is cooperating with OSHA and local emergency responders in their investigations of this fatality. Our thoughts and concerns are with the employee’s family and colleagues. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not publicly identifying the employee at this time."
