TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Florida A&M University Athletic Department has announced the termination of women's basketball assistant coach Terrance Chatman following his arrest.

The department released the following statement Monday:

Today’s arrest of Terrance Chatman, Florida A&M University’s former assistant women’s basketball coach, concludes an investigation that was launched immediately after FAMU Athletics was contacted by a supporter. It was alleged that Mr. Chatman cashed a $5,000 check that was donated to FAMU’s Men’s Basketball Team.

FAMU Athletics forwarded the donor’s claim to FAMU's Department of Campus Safety and Security and placed Mr. Chatman on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Mr. Chatman is charged with grand theft and fraud-uttering a false instrument in connection with the allegations.

The University holds employees accountable for following university policies and procedures and has terminated Chatman’s employment.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Florida A&M University women's basketball assistant coach Terrance Chatman has been arrested on charges of grand theft.

According to the police report, a complaint was made to the FAMU Department of Campus Safety and Security concerning a theft by the FAMU Foundation on August 15.

Police say the caller had asked the FAMU men's basketball coach if he had received a check for $5,000. The coach said no, so another check for $5,000 was written and cashed by the FAMU Foundation. The caller was later notified by his bank that his account had been overdrawn, and he discovered that the first check had been taken by an unknown person.

Police say a surveillance video showed a man fitting the description of Chatman completing the transaction for $5,000. Chatman was arrested on Monday and was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility.

Chatman was an assistant coach on the men's staff from November of 2013 to April of 2014 and briefly served as interim head coach from April to June of 2014. Last year was his first season on the Lady Rattlers coaching staff.
