Former FAMU professor, dean dies

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at FAMU, Ralph W. Turner, has died, according to the university.

FAMU says Dr. Turner passed away on December 26 while visiting family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 80 years old.

Turner began his tenure at FAMU in 1967, when he became an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry before becoming a professor, department chair and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

He was promoted to interim dean in 2006 before becoming the permanent dean from 2008 to 2012.

Family and friends will celebrate his life during his funeral on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 839 Cedar Springs Highway in Jakin, Georgia. A viewing will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the church.
