TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Family and friends are mourning a life cut short and looking for answers, after a Tallahassee man is killed in an overnight shooting.

The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Lester Denmark.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. Thursday morning at the Springfield Apartments, in the 1700 block of Joe Louis Street.

Folks we spoke to say they've already been dealing with past losses, and now this. The man they called "D" was found shot to death, lying in the back yard, in front of loved ones.

Aretha McGeathey is reminded of her son's death. Her son, Dominique Miles, was shot and killed in Tallahassee in 2014.

"I was very sick at the time," says McGeathey. "That morning as I left the hospital, I had to find out that my son was dead. Then to wake up this morning, and to find out that my daughter's husband-to-be is dead, died the same way, it is just so horrible. It's so horrible."

McGeathey says it feels like she's lost another son.

This latest victim, Denmark, was dating McGeathey's daughter.

"It's hurting so bad because he was such a good person to my daughter and my grandkids," McGeathey says.

Witnesses say he was outside talking on the phone behind the Joe Louis Street apartment when someone walked up and started shooting.

"My son was saying that the person was in black. He didn't see who it was because it was done so quickly," McGeathey says.

Police were on the scene early Thursday morning, with investigators returning in the afternoon.

Friend, Jelisa Hudson, says she'd just seen Denmark the night before.

"We were just talking about at the table how I had a dream that someone had gotten hurt." Hudson says. "He was telling me to pray about it and we were all just like don't think about that because we had lost already so many lives. It's just sad that she gotta go through another; and he just asked her to marry him."

McGeathey says, "I'm just praying that his family endures, and that whoever did this, they're caught."

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting, or has any information, to call the Tallahassee Police Department at (850) 891-4200, or Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS.
