TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Leon County Sheriff's Office is alerting local citizens about a recent complaint involving door-to-door lawn services.
Over the weekend, a local homeowner reported to the sheriff's office that he believed he had been the victim of a scam.
The homeowner told deputies that three people came to his door and offered to lay pine straw in his yard for $4 a bale.
The homeowner agreed to the services and the three pulled up a truck and trailer containing bales of pine straw in front of his house.
After laying the pine straw in the front yard, the individuals told the homeowner that they used more than a hundred bales and asked for a payment of more than $600.
The homeowner disagreed with their requested amount and eventually agreed to give them a check for $300.
Deputies say the three then left with the payment.
The homeowner told officials he then checked his home's security camera system and found that only approximately 30 bales appeared to be tossed from the trailer into his yard.
He then noticed that while two of the individuals were spreading the pine straw, the other one appeared to be recording video on his cell phone of the exterior of the house as he walked around it.
Earlier on this date, there was another complaint from the same subdivision in reference to subjects going door-to-door peddling the pine straw services, LCSO says.
Deputies are warning residents to be wary of this type of business and to make an agreement on the price and exact service amount before the work begins.
LCSO says homeowners should always try to use reputable businesses to conduct such services, especially around your home.
