TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Valentine's Day is a big day for sweethearts around the nation. The holiday is also a big day for local businesses.

The Florida Retail Federation estimates each consumer will spend an average of more than $143 for the holiday. An estimated $2 billion will be spent on flowers nationwide.

Hilly Fields Florist and Gift Shop has been bustling. Phones were ringing through Tuesday afternoon with a steady stream of customers stopping by. Florists in the back of the store were tirelessly putting together custom arrangements.

David Mayne helps run the family-owned shop. He says that Valentine's day is their busiest time of the year. Mother's day is a close second. Most custom orders are already in the works, and shoppers are stopping in for flowers and other gift items.

"We're doing our gift baskets. They're popular," said Mayne. "Orchids are really popular, but mostly the flowers. People really want flowers more than anything."

The shop is putting together so many arrangements, that they are storing some in a second spot before deliveries.

Staff at Hilly Fields Florist and Gift Shop will be working late on February 13 and early on Valentine's Day to complete orders.
