PERRY, Fla. (WCTV) -- A Perry man was struck and killed Wednesday night as he tried to pass a truck turning into a private driveway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 7:15 p.m. on Beach Road just south of White Oak Road.

The crash report states that 68-year-old Robert Lee Smith was traveling south on Beach Road behind a pickup truck and two other vehicles.

FHP says the motorcyclist tried to pass the vehicles in a no passing zone. As the driver of the pickup truck began to turn left into a private driveway, the motorcycle sideswiped the truck.

FHP says Smith drove onto the shoulder and was thrown from his motorcycle when it overturned.

Smith was transported to Doctor’s Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Troopers say he was wearing a helmet.
