TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Tallahassee Police Department has arrested Rickey Stevens for the murder of Mary Gray.

Arrest papers state Gray was meeting Stevens for a drug deal. Stevens allegedly opened fire on Gray's car as she was driving away.

Gray was found in her vehicle at Leon Arms Apartments at 2502 Holton Street on Sunday, with injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.

Gray was given medical attention on scene, and was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

After the case was classified as a homicide, Tallahassee Police investigators worked to locate a possible suspect and took Stevens into custody on Wednesday.

Stevens is facing second-degree murder charges.

Records show he was released from jail in August.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Tallahassee Police have identified the woman found dead in a car.

Officers say 40-year-old Mary Gray was found Sunday night at Leon Arms Apartments at 2502 Holton Street.

Many people who live in the complex and the surrounding area say they're in shock. One man said he saw the car sitting off to the side off the roadway, but thought the driver was having car trouble.

No one imagined the woman inside had been shot.

Tiffani Harris was in her apartment sleeping when the crime happened. "I just heard the gunshots while I was still in the house." She said.

Harris said when she found out what happened, "I was just like, oh, my God, something stay happening over here. Something stay going on down there in 'the bottom.' It's just crazy. I just can't imagine that feeling to her family."

Nearby resident Eugene Williams says he only saw the area surrounded by first responders when he woke up. "When I looked, I seen the light flashing on the other side of the building. Then I came over here and that's when I seen the paramedics and the fire trucks right there." He said.

Witnesses say Gray's car was crashed against a fence inside of the complex across from the Leon Arms Apartments office building.

Police say she was taken to the hospital late Sunday night but died of her gunshot wound.

"That's why I stay inside. When it gets dark, I don't come out." Williams said.

A forensics investigator returned to the scene Monday to continue looking for and collecting evidence. Detectives also went door to door hoping witnesses will come forward with answers.

No word from authorities on any suspects.

Harris said, "It's just like so devastating, being that you never know when it's your last time. I just can't imagine just how it feels losing somebody, a loved one, which is hard to deal with."

TPD is asking anyone with information about the case to please call (850) 891-4200 or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS.
