TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A child has died following an overnight apartment fire, the Tallahassee Fire Department confirms.

Crews were dispatched to the Rockbrook Garden Apartments at 1021 Idlewild Drive just after 12:00 a.m. Wednesday. TFD says firefighters found thick smoke and heavy fire coming from the building.

According to TFD, one person had been pulled out of the apartment building by neighbors before crews arrived. There is no word on their condition.

Witnesses told firefighters a young child was still inside the building. Crews battled through heavy smoke to reach the second floor and found and removed the child.

TFD says the child later succumbed to injuries they sustained in the fire. Authorities have not yet released the child's identity, but Leon County Schools confirms the child was not school-aged.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
