PERRY, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Perry Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam reported by a local resident.

The scam starts with the caller telling the victim that they are eligible to receive $7,000 for free. The caller then asks where they should send the money and suggests a variety of places where they could have a MoneyGram or Western Union money wire sent.

In this particular instance, the local resident began asking a series of questions and the scammer abruptly hung up.

Perry Police say the scammer in this case was calling from (202) 721-5544, a Washington, D.C. area code.

Authorities are reminding residents that if they receive a call from a person making a claim that seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Police say, if you receive a call of this nature, immediately hang up. Citizens may also report the scammers to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
