TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Tallahassee Police Department is investigating after a person was found dead inside an abandoned home.

TPD responded to the scene at 1410 Evangeline Way at 8:45 a.m. on Monday. The address is just a few blocks east of the Governor's Square Mall.

Officers were initially combing through the woods at the Blairstone at Governor's Square apartments that back up to Evangeline Way. First responders then relocated to the other side of the wooded area, setting up near the Best Western hotel.

The manager at the hotel tells WCTV that homeless people are known to hang around the area. He said there is an abandoned building in the woods they frequently use for shelter.

"It is very scary, and not only for us. Just behind this here are apartment complexes with families and kids not even 150 yards away," said Mike Parmar, the manager at Best Western.

We have no word at this time on the identity of the deceased individual.

Police said in a news release on Monday, "Although preliminary findings suggest foul play was not the cause of death, this remains an active investigation."

TPD investigators from the Violent Crimes and Forensic Units were called in to assume the investigation and process the scene. TPD is asking anyone with information on this case to call (850) 891-4200, or call Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
