TALLAHASSEE, Fla (WCTV) -- Annie Johnson once again opened her doors to local families on Christmas Day, providing hot meals to those in need.
"Well I think it's real good help because of people, the help is needed anytime," said Melvin Edmund Gilliam.
Annie Johnson has been putting on a holiday lunch for 18 years, serving around 800 people each Christmas.
"I feel good because through the community they help me do this and if I can make someone happy I want to do it," said Johnson.
She says she has seen the lunch grow over the years through efforts of community members and volunteers, who also feel rewarded by giving back.
"I see a lot of people here that I've seen in years past which is always a wonderful thing. It's a blessing to be able to do it," said one volunteer.
"Makes you feel better, gives you an expectancy that there's life even in the darkest times," added another.
For Annie, there's a simple answer as to why she puts the lunch on each December.
"This is my mission...and my ministry, the lord told me to do it," said Johnson.
She says she will continue to do it as long as the community is behind her.
