TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A third grade Springwood Elementary School teacher has been named the 2016-17 Leon County Schools Teacher of the Year.

Jessica Hooker was named Teacher of the Year by school officials Thursday.

Hooker has taught at Springwood for her entire eight-year teaching career. She's a graduate of Florida State and currently teaches third grade science and math.

She also developed a school-wide mentoring program, volunteers with the Children's Home Society and mentors with the FSU Early Childhood Education Program.

LCS Superintendent Rocky Hanna says Hooker is an "incredibly powerful role model" for students and Springwood Principal Dr. Christopher Small says she's beyond deserving of the honor.

“Mrs. Hooker is a hard worker who is dedicated to performing and perfecting her craft as an educator,” said Small. “From day one, she has proven to have the best interest of the students at the heart of all that she does. The Springwood community is incredibly proud of Jessica, she is beyond deserving of this recognition.”

Hooker will receive awards and recognition from community sponsors, and also a free yearlong lease on a brand new Kia Forte.
