TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Four people are now displaced after an afternoon house fire on Thanksgiving Day.
"I don't know, I was freaking out. Panicking,” said 12-year-old Jhorje Rummage, who was visiting family at the home on the 1400 block of Callen Street when the fire broke out. "I yelled, 'it's a fire,' and I went to go look for the fire extinguisher."
According to officials, the fire broke out around 1:14 p.m. The fire was contained to one room of the house, however there was heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.
Jhorje was the first one to see the fire.
"The urgency in his voice, it just sounded serious. So I got up,” said Eugene Arnold, who lives in the home along with three other family members. "All of the sudden the fire just got big and a large cloud of black smoke and I was coughing, so I told me and my godson, let’s go.”
Upon arrival, the Tallahassee Fire Department extinguished the fire within minutes. An official cause has not yet been released. Smoke damage has made the home uninhabitable.
"Before I went in the firefighters said you're going to need to prepare yourself for what you’re going to see inside,” said Peggy Senor, the homeowner. She’s lived there since 1994. "You can't even prepare yourself... it's just, wow. I don't have anything anymore. It's just gone.”
The Red Cross is currently assisting with housing for the tenants.
And, a GoFundMe account has been started by family members.
It reads in part:
“All our memories, all our property, everything that I could possibly remember from my childhood is completely gone. I know things like this occur around the world, but never would I believe such tragedy, such devastation would happen to us.”
So far, nearly $2,000 has been raised.
"We weren't looking for it to be like that but, it happens. But, we're glad there wasn't anyone hurt,” said Arnold.
