TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A Tallahassee police officer fired his weapon while responding to a burglary.

The incident happened Monday night around 9:47 p.m. at The Cove apartment complex on Mission Road near White Drive.

TPD says the officer involved is Clifford Crouch.

He's been with TPD since December 2015 and worked in Baton Rouge, Louisiana before that. He has a total of four years of experience.

Cole Weldon says he was inside of his apartment at the time.

"The next thing I know, we heard a few gunshots. I look outside and there's cops everywhere, all in the back of the complex; guns drawn. Then we saw three guys come out of the house. They cuffed them and sat them on the sidewalk," Weldon said.

Investigators say someone called 911 to report a burglary in progress at an apartment complex.

TPD says Crouch feared for his safety when encountering someone they believed had a gun.

"I was shocked to find that out. I thought it would be one of the kids they pulled out of the house that was shooting," Weldon said.

Alysha Girard lives nearby. She said, "When I came home from work, I saw about 20 or 30 cops just sitting out here. Later on, we heard helicopters going by. We didn't find out until later it was a robbery. It was pretty scary."

Curtis Brown was a bit shaken from an attempted burglary and shooting so close to home.

He said, "It was just like, okay, is this going to happen again? Do I need to move? Can I move when I just renewed my lease? It was a lot. It's more so about my safety. Are they going to keep the area surveillance or not?"

The scene also startling Brown's friend, Jonathan Sancho.

"I was scared because I thought it was his apartment. I was like, oh Lord, what has happened to my friend?"

TPD says no one was hurt.

It's unknown who the three guys Cole Weldon says he saw handcuffed.

Officers say there have not been any arrests at this time.

Crouch's discipline record at TPD is clean. He is on administrative leave during this investigation, per standard department procedure.
