Thomasville, Tifton JC Penney stores among 138 closing

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) -- Many people were shocked to hear the news about local J.C.Penney stores closing.

The ones in Thomasville and Tifton are slated to shut down.

Brenda Clinton lives in Bainbridge but frequents the JCPenney in Thomasville. She said doesn't want the store to close. She said, "I don't like it. This is my favorite store. When I go to JC Penney, this is where I go. I wish they'd keep it open."

Thomasville resident Richard Sterzoy said, "You have to go all the way to Tallahassee now. That's what the bad thing is about it."

Sterzoy's wife, Martha, is worried about the employees. She said, "Because the jobs they're losing. Need the jobs, people do. I'm retired, I don't need the job, but, other people do. I love Penney's and I'm very sad that they're closing."

Thomasville resident Atavis Lovejoy said, " I know I did a lot of shopping when I was in school. When I finally got my first job, this is the first place I came. So, I'm going to miss it. I'm going to be a little sentimental."

All of the company's slated closures are expected to be complete by June. Roughly 5,000 jobs will be impacted, according to a press release issued Friday.

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) -- JC Penney stores in Thomasville and Tifton are among the 138 total stores slated to close later this year.

The stores are currently located at Gateway Plaza in Thomasville and the Tifton Mall. No other area stores are expected to be closed.

The retailer announced the closings in February and today released a full list of the closures. In total, two Florida stores and five Georgia stores will be closed.

According to a press release, the liquidation process for most of the stores will begin on April 17. The company says the closures are part of "a continuing effort to advance sustainable growth and long-term profitability."

All of the company's slated closures are expected to be complete by June. Roughly 5,000 jobs will be impacted, according to a press release issued Friday.
