VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- Two people were found shot to death early Sunday in a car that had crashed into a pair of electrical poles.
Officers with the Valdosta Police Department responded around 1:11 a.m. to a report of a car accident in the 600 block of York Street.
Arriving officers found the driver and a passenger in the front seat deceased inside the vehicle. Investigators say they initially thought the two people had succumbed to injuries they sustained in the crash, but discovered that both victims had gunshot wounds.
The victims have been identified as Clarence Burnett, 26, and Geneva Norwood, 19. VPD says it is investigating the incident as a double homicide.
Police say it appears the shooting happened near where the crashed vehicle was located. Investigators believe there may be more than one suspect in the shooting.
"Initial indications reflect this case may be drug-related based on an examination of the vehicle. However, the investigation is in its beginning phases and there is more evidence to review," stated Chief Brian Childress.
Investigators are reconstructing the scene and checking the citywide camera system for any possible leads.
