TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The snow and ice may be gone, but the cold is sticking around and many seniors are struggling to stay warm.

Tallahassee's Elder Care Services has just three space heaters in stock
and nearly 90 seniors on a waiting list to get one.

With lows in the 20's in the forecast for most of this week, Elder Care says the need is urgent.

"Elders just can't get warm enough," Elder Care's Ed Gines said. "So for us, it's uncomfortable, but for older folks it can be dangerous."

"Absolutely. Absolutely. It affects their very well being," Gines continued.
"So it's been an extreme demand."

We tagged along as Gines delivered one of the heaters to a woman who lives in a mobile home on the city's northwest side.

"It's cold. It's really been cold," she said.

She says she is grateful for the small heater. Right now she has no central heat and air, and only one small space heater in the house.

Elder Care Services is hoping folks can donate heaters or money to buy them as soon as possible. Gines says they're delivering them to seniors the moment they arrive.
