TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Michael Phillips of Chiles High School has been named the 2017-18 Gatorade Florida Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.
The Gatorade Company says Phillips is the first athlete to be honored from Chiles High School in this category.
Phillips won his second consecutive Class 3A individual state championship this year, running a time of 15:14.69, and led the Timberwolves to a second place finish as a team.
He also has victories in the Cougar Challenge, the Big Bend Invitational, the Buffalo Invitational, the District 3 championships and the Region 1 championships.
Phillips took second at the Great American Cross Country Festival, as well as the Foot Locker South Regional championships, and finished 16th at the national Footlocker Cross Country Championships.
Off the course, Phillips volunteers for local charity races and has maintained a 3.61 GPA.
After winning Florida runner of the year, Phillips is now in the running for the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year award.
