VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team is set to host a first round Gulf South Conference quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., as the No. 7 seeded Delta State Lady Statesmen come to town for Super Tuesday at The Complex.
Valdosta State racked up a plethora of postseason honors on Monday, as the Gulf South Conference named both Madi Mitchell and Kenya Samone' Dixon First Team All-GSC. Mitchell ranks among the league's best in total points (462, 4th), points per game (16.5, 4th), field goal percentage (50.9 percent, 2nd), and rebounds per game (8.4, 7th). She has racked up 10 double-doubles on the year and has recorded three GSC Player of the Week honors. Samone' Dixon, meanwhile, is the top three-point shooter in the league with an average of 42.0 percent from behind the arc. She ranks 23rd in the country in the same category.
Head Coach Carley Kuhns was also honored on Monday for her opening season success, as she was named the GSC Coach of the Year. The Blazers' 19-9 overall record and 16-6 GSC record marks their best since the league went away from the divisional format in 2011.
A red hot Valdosta State team enters Super Tuesday having won nine of their last ten games. The Lady Blazers are seeded at No. 2 in the GSC Tournament, and hold a current South Region ranking of No. 8.
Tuesday's contest marks the third of the season between VSU and DSU. The Lady Blazers have defeated the Lady Statesmen twice this season, with their last victory coming in a 48-38 triumph over Delta State on February 4th in Cleveland, Miss. The matchup marks the 37th in the history of the two programs, with DSU holding an 8-36 advantage in the all-time series.
