VSU Basketball has outmatched it's opponents throughout the regular season, now comes the task of putting that success to use in the Gulf South Conference tournament. After a horrendous (4-7) start to the season, the Lady Blazers blew by the competition, finishing unbeaten in conference play. The first time in school history.
VSU Women's Head Basketball Coach Kiley Hill says,
"I feel good about anything right now. Everything we have is a bonus. To be a number one seed, to go out undefeated, to have our seniors go out with a big win in front of the biggest crowd ever for a women's basketball game has a lot of positives and I give a lot of credit to those kids that are in that locker room."
The men hold the number two seed heading into the tournament as co champions of the GSC east division. Last season VSU fell to Arkansas Tech in the finals, and for the seven seniors, that has been a game etched in their minds.
VSU Senior Forward Tyrone Curnell adds,
"Some unfinished business from last year from losing to Arkansas Tech in the championship. We're gunning to get better, we're so hungry to get better so we're going to do our best to get back there."
VSU Men's Head Basketball Coach Mike Helfer adds,
"Basketball is unique. You have to make sure that you're on your game right from the start. It usually has momentum swings because all the teams are good. We have to make sure that we continue to get better this week, come out and start strong and play strong and get things done but you have to be who you are and do what you do and if we can do that then I'll feel good."
At the start of the season both teams were predicted to finish top in the conference, thus far, those early season expectations are becoming a reality.
