Tallahassee - Phinia Mathews is married to who many say is the oldest of the nearly 40 pastors from Tallahassee to Port St. Joe.

Elder Richard Mathews just turned 100 years old. In his younger days he even helped cut the lumber and build the church he retired from just five years ago. He preached for more than half a century at St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church.

His other love in life, besides his ten children, is his wife.

He met Phinia after being married to his first wife for more than five decades. Elder Mathews remembers exactly how long they were together before she passed, "We lived together about 55 years, three months and ten days and four hours."

After losing her, he swore off marriage, but says one lesson he would pass on to anyone who'll listen is, "I said I would never marry again, but I don't want anyone to ever say what they're not going to do."

Now he says they get a long like two peas in a pod. And that's what he says makes living one hundred years young the greatest milestone of all.

Have a Safe Halloween Night

Before your ghosts and goblins trick or treat this year, parents should keep in mind some safety tips.
  • Carry a Flashlight ~ A glow bracelet, necklace, or flashing attire also work well for visibility.
  • Plan Route in Advance ~ Trick or treat in familiar neighborhoods or areas.
  • Only Visit Lit Houses ~ Residents who do not wish to be bothered by trick or treaters often leave off their lights.
  • Accompany Your Children ~ If they are older and trick or treat without an adult, set firm rules and have them carry a cell phone.
  • Think Practical for Costumes ~ Be sure a child's mask allows full visibility and breathing.
  • Inspect All Candy ~ Never allow children to eat candy before it is inspected and throw away anything that is opened.
