WASHINGTON (AP) -- Environmental and watchdog groups are preparing to sue to block construction of two nuclear reactors in eastern Georgia that would be the nation's first built-from-scratch nuclear power plant in a generation.
The groups say the plant should be blocked until federal regulators approve safety changes prompted by last year's nuclear disaster in Japan.
Twelve groups, including the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, say they prepared the suit Thursday and expect it to be filed no later than Friday in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-1 last week to issue a permit to Atlanta-based Southern Co. to build and operate two new reactors at its Plant Vogtle site south of Augusta.
The NRC last approved construction of a nuclear plant in 1978.

In Homestead Florida we have Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant. Their are two nuclear power units. The first unit began operation in 1972 the second in 1973. It generates about 1,400 million watts of electricity enough power to supply the annual needs of more than 450,000 homes. Nuclear power produces no greenhouse gas emissions. It is a safe, reliable and a low-cost producer of electricity. Go and look http://www.fpl.com/environment/nuclear/about_turkey_point.shtml
Don't want coal. Don't want drilling. Don't want pipelines. Don't want refineries. Don't want oil. Windmills destroy the scenery. Solar panels are ugly. Don't want nuclear. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I want my electricity 24/7 and it better be cheap!
What a bunch of hypocrites. I say if they don't want nuclear plants then their electricity should be disconnected. I bet they'd change their tune if that happened. Typical Dumbocrats.
