88 jobs will soon be cut at the YRC Freight plant in Lake Park, Georgia.

Tons of supplies are shipped through there everyday from all across the region. But the economy is not what it once was.

The YRC Freight plant in Lake Park was a major distribution center, but now it's being chopped down to a small terminal. That's bad news for most of its employees.

Morris Myers is the business director for the Teamsters Local 528. He tells Eyewitness News reporter Greg Gullberg he thinks the whole situation is very unfortunate.

"Anytime you have a change of operation like this some places gain and some places lose. And it's just unfortunate that this time it's going to be Lake Park/ Valdosta, Georgia terminal," said Myers.

They're looking at cutting 25 dock employees, 5 switchers, 35 road drivers and 23 mechanics. Add all those up and that's 88 employees.

The cuts will take effect April 8th. Employees in eliminated positions will have the option to move to other facilities but Myers says Lake Park is home for many employees and they can't just leave.

"If they choose to move they will not lose their jobs, otherwise we will incur some layoffs," Myers tells Gullberg.

Myers says about 30 people will be able to keep their jobs in Lake Park. No plans are set in stone right now. There is a strategizing meeting anticipated for next month in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
